A little while ago I met a student at my personal stylist training course. As we always do at every course, I ask each student to tell me why they are interested in becoming a personal stylist. Rosa starts to tell us a story about how she was looking to become a stylist because she was interested in helping other women feel good about themselves through their clothes and style, as she herself had recently lost a lot of weight through Weight Watchers (note: this post is not endorsed / sponsored by Weight Watchers!). So much so in fact, Rosa was actually their magazine cover girl in September 2012.
However as well as that, Rosa told the group how she still sometimes saw herself as that larger girl and was on occasion still dressing for her old self, and not the new Rosa – so part of her reason for doing the course was for her own personal development. This is a very common thing that I hear from clients and let me tell you – there were 5 other students at the course all chomping at the bit for a chance to style the beautiful Rosa and show her how amazing she looked!!!
Needless to say, we all had a blast dressing her on the course, and by the end of the course I saw a new, confident Rosa. Over the months that passed, I’ve watched Rosa’s confidence grow even more and I really wanted to share her inspiring story with you on this Q & A on how she did it, her motivation, her experience on the course & with this blog.
Really, the pictures say it all!!! Just take a look at how much Rosa’s style has changed in the photos!!! You go girl!!
Rosa, please tell us a little bit about you
My name is Rosa and I’m a born and bred Sydney girl. I am 33 years old and currently work full time as a Finance Manager, part time as a Weight Watchers leader.
Why did you join Weight Watchers and when?
I joined in December 2009, only a month before my 30th birthday. I had been feeling very unhealthy and uncomfortable about my weight for a while and although I had already lost 4 kilos by taking up regular exercise after joining my local gym, I didn’t feel like I was making much progress after losing those first 4 kilos. WW is not about dieting or restricting food intake and is all about learning to balance out your choices so I decided to keep going.
How much weight did you lose?
I lost 4 kilos before joining WW and an additional 13 kilos through WW, so 17 kilos in total 🙂
What would you say are your secrets to keeping the weight off?
A balanced approach to a healthy lifestyle and consistency! I still enjoy going out to dinner with my hubby, sharing desserts (sometimes indulging in full desserts!), I still enjoy chocolates and ice cream, but I have learned to balance it all out with better food choices the rest of the time, in addition to physical activity. If you are consistent in your approach, make healthy choices and make exercise an enjoyable habit rather than a chore, it becomes easy to maintain.
For example, I recently gave up my gym membership because I just wasn’t enjoying it anymore, but I didn’t stop exercising I took up walking with my hubby and fur babies for an hour each day instead and follow this up with a bit of resistance training a few times a week.
What would you say was the biggest challenge you faced through your journey of self confidence ?
Definitely moving from a place of self loathing and negative thought patterns to accepting myself as a whole person. Learning to love and appreciate myself for who I am and the body I have been blessed with. When someone compliments me now, I simply say, thank you and smile rather than point out something negative about myself or brush their comment off.
Why did you do the styling training course?
When I was heavier I was used to dressing a certain way to try and hide the fact that I was overweight. As I lost weight I had to let go of a lot of my favourite outfits and I had a lot of trouble with this! I was still dressing the same way because I had no idea how to dress for my new shape. I was very scared about trying the new fashion styles because I still saw myself as a fat person and didn’t think the new styles suited me or my body shape. I was originally going to hire a stylist for a wardrobe and shopping consultation but then decided to do the course myself because I wanted the knowledge myself. I have always been fascinated by fashion but never felt creative enough to pursue a career in the industry. This gave me a taste of it without being too complicated. I learned what makes fashion work and what doesn’t. Simple! 🙂
How did the Smitten Styling Academy course help you in your journey?
The course really opened my eyes when it came to my own body shape and what did and didn’t suit me. I started seeing myself with new eyes and started to think about how I could really use fashion to express myself and display the confidence that I was beginning to grow within myself (without being arrogant!). Losing weight was the first step and the styling course was what I needed to seal the deal in my confidence and self acceptance journey.
How has the Wendy Mak blog helped you develop your own personal style?
The blog has helped me a lot, mostly when it comes to accessorising! I was one of those girls that loved buying accessories but never really knew or understood how to make them work. I picked up quite a few tips from the blog and now I’m using more accessories (not all at once though everything in moderation!) and I don’t feel like I’ve wasted my money!
The blog has also helped me work out how to work latest fashion trends into my wardrobe with some key basic pieces I already have without having to spend hundreds of dollars. One great example would have to be the floral post I have really struggled to work out how to get that one in and thanks to that Miranda Kerr blog you wrote, I am now on the hunt for the ideal floral skirt to go with the white sleeveless shirt I already have in my wardrobe and is one of my basics. Oh and who could ever go past the fashion on a budget blogs? I love that you don’t just focus on designer labels. Us regular people can still look good even though we don’t spend thousands of dollars on clothes! 🙂
Where to now for Rosa?
I have finished all my studies in Personal Training and Massage Therapy and I am in the process of starting my own business to help others achieve their ultimate balance in living a healthy lifestyle. I am also now a leader at Weight Watchers which I love and I can’t wait to get started in my business and being part of other people’s success stories. 🙂
Thank you Rosa for sharing your story. Please do take a moment in our comments below to give Rosa a little applause for her achievements !!
Meanwhile I’m off to do a few jogs and a bit of gym work!!!! Until then, Happy styling xx
