Behind the inspiration that is Lisa Messenger

Written by Wendy Mak

Lisa Messenger The CollectiveInspiration.

A word that’s constantly thrown about especially in business.

“Who’s your inspiration?”

“She’s so inspirational!”

My regular readers know I love exploring and understanding. And today I wanted to find out – just what makes someone “inspirational”?

To understand inspiration is important because in business (and life actually) the best, most memorable entrepreneurs are those that give inspiration to those around them.

Certainly for me, I don’t want to have just “a business” or “a product” or “a service”. I want to serve others by leaving a bit of myself that they hopefully remember and encourages them to do something – big or little – that is good in their lives.

Lisa Messenger from The Collective

One such inspirational person in business who is definitely everywhere at the moment is the amazing Lisa Messenger.

Lisa is the founder and numero uno at The Renegade Collective, a new magazine that’s all about “game changers, rule breakers, thought leaders & style makers”. Since it launched in March this year it’s taken the world by storm – being now available in 20 countries and from next year in Barnes & Noble in the US.

Quite simply, there’s buzz around the magazine but there’s even more buzz around Lisa.

So when she was announced as the guest speaker for a breakfast event, I was definitely attending. Which is saying a lot because I’m not normally a fan of breakfast events (blow drying a bob like mine is hard work before 7am), but this is Lisa Messenger.

I wasn’t alone. She had a room of 80 women, all bleary eyed and in need of a caffeine hit but they were there, excited about Lisa. Every single one was there for her. I spoke to women at my table who said “I came just to hear Lisa”.

She certainly didn’t disappoint, with the whole room hooked and everyone listening to every single word. Including me.

So just what is it that makes someone like Lisa so inspirational?

(And I wish we had the time to explore Lisa’s fascinating background and how she gave birth to The Collective but we don’t in this post).

Now I could write for hours on this whole topic of inspiration but my new aim is to have each blog post take no longer than 4 minutes for you to read. Which means cutting right to the chase. So if I had to summarise it – the most inspirational people I’ve met always deliver a message of honesty and hope.

I know, you’re going what?? Honesty and hope? Is that IT?? That doesn’t sound too exciting.

And while certainly these aren’t the ONLY reasons why someone is inspirational, these are the two that are constants for me – so hear me out.

When it comes to connecting with women, we want honesty. We don’t want the false glitz and glam – just give us the truth damn it! (But remember not to fall victim to TMI – just share what you need to make your point – no more, no less).

Lisa shared the highs of her current success, but she also shared some lows. She didn’t over-share but she didn’t hide it either. It was just there – raw and honest.

Honesty about even the not-so-good stuff is what people appreciate and understand.

While we want sincerity and honesty, truly inspiring women also leave you with a sense of hope. A sense that you too, can do what they’ve done. I don’t mean an exact copy or necessarily to the same scale (unless you want to) but that what they’ve achieved is not a one in a million story.

There’s no denying the success of Lisa’s business is pretty phenomenal, but her key message was “anything is possible”. She said “keep putting yourself out there until someone says yes” and also “don’t live in fear and stay small”. [Click here to tweet that!]

What she said left me with the sense that I could do anything if I just kept going at it and believing in myself. It was a great message to start my day with.

I would love for you to do just one thing.

Tell me in the comments area below – who inspires you?? Your mum, a public persona, I’d love to hear it!

I want to thank you all so much for the amazing comments on last week’s post. My new blog design is coming up in about a week so hang tight – BIG changes are a-coming so stay with me on this new journey.

With honesty, hope & happiness,

I am inspired by the Peaks Foundation. I came across their organisation recently when I heard their co-founder speak and it hasn’t only inspired me, but my two young daughters also. I love other women striving hard for the success of other women – it needs to happen more often!

I’m going to put it out there and say that Roxy Jacenko inspires me. The girl has chutzpah – she started her business with nothing but gumption and perseverance. Sure, she has her detractors (any strong personality does) but whenever I have a moment of ‘I’m not talented/experienced/clever enough’ I think of her, at just 24, starting her PR business (not knowing a thing) and I *know* I can do it too.

Ha ha!!! Well I love chutzpah that’s for sure and I love that she’s inspiring you in that way. Plus we’re all in your corner as well xxx
